Edgewater, Town of

Small town, population 700 (estimated)

History

Edgewater was founded in 722, three hundred years ago.  The fishing was very good along the shore of the lake and the area boasted good farm land.  The farm land is rather hilly and rocky, but once cleared, the soil proved very good.  Arvin Free built a home along the shore and soon a small village occupied the spot.

Edgewater prospered and grew when a valuable vein of iron was discovered in the nearby hills.  That composes the economy of Edgewater to this day – fishing, mining and some farming.  Edgewater has never been able to grow enough food to feed all of the residents but has always been able to trade.

Life has been peaceful generally.  There was a major goblin incursion in 857.  A contingent of troops from West was stationed in the town briefly and a minor battle was fought along the shores of the lake.  Since then, goblin raids have occurred but not with any frequency to cause alarm.

Prominent Citizens

Paul Olmea, the town jeweler, is the head of the family.  His family controls the mine as well as a large farm outside of town.  Paul is married to Pamela, who runs the farm.  Justin is Paul’s younger brother.  The Olmea family has been in the area for many years and many people wonder why they are not the noble family of the area.  For whatever reason, they have never been given to reins of power.

James Wilcok owns and manages the most successful farm in the town.  His brother is a fisherman and the two men seem to hate each other.  The Wilcok family have been in the area nearly as long as the Olmea family.

Michael and Marsha Small run the outfitter store and a lumber business.  Marsha is the brains of the operation apparently, as well as the beauty.  Michael is frequently in the woods looking for timber and/or bringing logs into town.  The Small family once held title to the lands of Edgewater, but lost title to the Prince several generations ago.

Alphonse Beek, local historian and naturalist.  Alphonse is a very ugly man but seems to know quite a bit about the surrounding lands and what plants and creatures live in these parts.  He seems to be friendly if people get past his facial deformities.

Shane and Gonzale Beck are young and ambitious.  Gonzale runs a barge between Edgewater and West.  Shane runs on the inns in town.  The Beck family is here because Edgewater is rather remote and there are rumors that a guild of thieves is looking for Shane.  Apparently Shane came into some money (family inheritance?) and this allows the family to start the two businesses.

Priest of Geshtai (lakes), James Hammin.  He takes care of the Geshtai shrine and the other shrines in town (Beory and Xerbo mainly although most major deities have at least a small shrine).  James is the town priest and is well liked by the townspeople.

Priest of Bleredd (hills, mines), Buck Tall.  Buck is active in the mine and the shrine to Bleredd is located there.  Many miners pay homage to Bleredd.

Chamberlain Robert (?) seems like a toady type of person.  He seems to be trying very hard to please.  He is very organized.

Treasurer Lora is a very serious older woman.  She has kept the books for the Count for many years and her father and grand-father before her.

Guard Captain William is competent but not very skilled (Fighter 2).  He immediately offers to resign as he was not killed when the Ogres took the past Count.

Turgon the Mad Interesting Items

Turgon the Mad had numerous items or at least there are rumors of many items that he possessed.
It is known that he had a bastard sword and a bow.  He was a collector of fine tapestries.  Most
of these were lost in the fall of Turgon's city.

Items

Bastard Sword, called Honor,
Enchanted Long Bow,
Beacon of Hope (enchanted lantern),
Horseshoes of Speed,
Saddlebags of Holding,
Enchanted Ring,
Mithril shirt,
Enchanted Breastplate.

The sword was (possibly still is) possessed by a spirit of some kind.  The sword is capable of
speaking several languages and could warn Turgon of dangers.

The long bow was enchanted to never miss (according to rumor).  Turgon was an excellent archer
and competed in many tournaments.

The Beacon of Hope was a lantern that revealed hidden items and intentions within its glow.  Turgon
often used it at court.

The ring apparently allowed Turgon to set his opponents on fire somehow.  It either shot out flames
or created a bright ray of light that lit items on fire.

The breastplate caused enemies to lose heart against Turgon.

These are all rumors as Turgon has been dead for centuries and most of his items were lost during
the fall of Turgon's city and resulting chaos.

Lands near Lycos

Devilmen swim the waters to the west of Lycos. These creatures have been a source of
trouble for centuries. The Kedane and West navies have hunted/battled them in recent
years. There are no known lands to the west. An elvish ship has come from the west
on occasion. The last time the ship showed up was 996.

The northern isle (of the Lycos chain) is home to numerous humanoid tribes. These
tribes are mostly orcs and goblins, but have been led by Gnolls in the past. Other
humanoid creatures, such as Ogres and Hill giants, are also known to be present.

The southern isle (of the Lycos chain) is home to goblins. Goblins overran the towns
several centuries ago and have not moved out since. Kedane has made several
attempts to defeat them, but these attempts have not worked out.

Past the northern isle lies the small island of Els and the town of Elsburg. This
town is home to many unsavory characters. The town is fiercely independent and denies
docking to all recognized navies. The town is a source of Allenwood which is used
to make strong furniture.

Uncivilized peoples live to the northeast. These people live in tribes. The known
tribes are John's People, Realm of Ice and Cold Reach. The Realm of Ice tribe is
known for conducting raids for slaves and treasure. The Cold Reach tribe hunts
whales and trades whale oil and ivory.

To the east lies the island chain of Hydyr. Several of cities in this island chain
trade with West. Those cities are Hydyr (mineral ore), Morgantown (mineral ore),
Red Sea City (food and wine), Pegolin (mineral ore) and Baku (exotic wood). These
cities are all city states similar to West. The Hydyr island chain is larger than the
Lycos chain. The Dwarven mines of Matakar and Katakar can be found on two of the
islands. The waters are not always safe as pirates are known to ply the waters.

Farther to the east, the Mithril isle is home to the Dwarven mine of Dabbor. This mine
is known for working a vein of mithril. Adamantite is also rumored to exist in the
mine but the Dwarves deny this rumor. The cities of Glasson and Chirile are the large
human settlements on the island. They trade with West providing mineral ore and
wood products for food and manufactured goods.

The Isle of Wizards lies to the east of Hydyr. Not much is known about this island or
even if it is a single island. The large land mass of Contopia lies farther to the
east. It is home to many strange beasts and fantastical kingdoms. You have never met
anyone from this area although many sailors claim to have witnessed many sites. The
more grog, the more sites.
